Monks Shopping for Phones

In Thailand in 2026, it is common to see Buddhist monks using mobile phones, but the question of whether they may shop with their own money depends on the distinction between monastic rules (Vinaya) and everyday practice.

According to the Vinaya (monastic code)

In the Theravāda tradition followed in Thailand:

  • Monks are not supposed to accept or possess money directly.
  • Traditionally, a lay steward (called a kappiya or attendant) handles money and purchases on a monk’s behalf.
  • Ideally, if a monk needs a mobile phone, robes, medicine, or other necessities, a layperson buys them or manages the funds.

In Practice in Thailand

The reality is often different:

  • Many monks carry smartphones.
  • Many use mobile banking, top up phone credit, and communicate through apps like LINE.
  • In many temples—especially in towns and villages—it is not unusual to see monks in convenience stores, supermarkets, or mobile phone shops.
  • Some monks pay directly with cash or electronic payments, even though this is not strictly consistent with the Vinaya.

In Rural Isaan

In villages like Nong Din Dum and the surrounding Ban Thaen area:

  • Practices vary from temple to temple.
  • Some abbots enforce the Vinaya very strictly and discourage monks from handling money.
  • Other temples are more relaxed, and villagers generally accept monks buying everyday necessities themselves.

Buying a mobile phone

A monk may:

  • Own and use a mobile phone for communication, study, and temple activities.
  • Have a phone donated by lay supporters.
  • In practice, some monks purchase phones themselves, although under strict monastic discipline the purchase should ideally be handled through a lay steward.

So, if you see a monk in your area buying a phone or shopping with cash, it is not unusual in modern Thailand, even if it does not reflect the strictest interpretation of the traditional monastic rules. Different temples and monks observe those rules with varying degrees of rigor.
