When you live in rural Isaan, you give up a lot of foods you loved in the west because they are simply not available locally.
However, if you travel out to a city, you can find western foods, although the price may shock you.
At Top’s in Chaiyaphum, a Stouffers frozen single serve macaroni and cheese cost 269 thb (US $8.68) each.
The same thing in the USA is US $2.97.
That is quite a huge difference.
For 269 thb in rural Isaan you can buy 5 or 6 Thai food dishes.
Foreigners that end up living in rural Isaan adapt the eating habits and eat mostly locally Thai dishes due to availability and cost.
It is not to say you can’t have western food if you can afford it, but I would have to think hard before spending that much money for macaroni and cheese.
