A whole grilled chicken sells for 140 thb (US $4.39) in most places around here.
That is quite expensive considered the prices of all the other Isaan dishes, including papaya salad for other 30 baht. (US $1.00)
Most foreigners in tourists areas and the cities would think these prices are a steal, however, there are many rural folks here that cannot afford to spend 140 thb for 1 chicken.
Most folks stick to what they can afford and as much food/value as they can get.
For me and my wife, 140 thb for a whole chicken and 30 thb for a papaya salad (170 thb US $5.25) makes for an excellent lunch.
It works out to US $2.75 each person.
Ok for foreigners but as mentioned, many locals would balk at spending 140 for 1 chicken when they could buy 4 or 5 other meals for the same price.
