Rice Harvest

When November arrives, it brings a familiar scent—the sweet, pandan-like aroma of ripening Khao Hom Mali (Jasmine rice) and of Khao Niew (Sticky rice).

Locals that planted their rice crops early are now reaping the rewards this week being able to cut and dry their rice.

The golden rice fields are the signal that the rice is ready to cut.

Golden Rice Fields

There are 2 methods to cutting the rice.

Hire a rice tractor.

Rice Tractor

Cut it by hand.

Once the rice is cut and separated, it must be laid out on a blue screen to dry.

Drying Rice

You will see these blue screens all over the place this time of year.

When the rice is dried, it is bagged up and ready to process.

Local machines separate the white rice kernel from the brown outside rice husk.

The white rice is then bagged and ready for sale, or to store away for eating all year.

Current price on offer is 17 thb per kg.

One average field (1 Rai) of rice can yield 400 to 500 Kg’s of rice.
