Rescuing a Street Puppy

In rural Isaan, there are stray dogs all over the place.

They live on their own almost anywhere.

One of the issues is the non-stop mating of these street dogs.

Litters of puppies can be seen on the side of the road, out in the sugarcane fields and everywhere else.

Many puppies are born into desertion and abandonment, left to grow up on their own and fend for themselves.

I decided to rescue one of these puppies that was living in a drain culvert in a sugarcane field.

Stray Puppy

Not one house around for miles, you have to wonder if they were born there or just dumped there out of the way?

Many rural Thai’s cannot afford to feed dogs, so when an unexpected litter shows up, they are rounded up and dumped somewhere out in the fields.

I was taking a morning ride on my Honda Scoopy and came across a new litter of puppies.

I rescued a male, 6 week old puppy and brought it home.

New puppies like this, need lots of attention and affection to get use to being around people.

They will cry a lot if they don’t happen to see you for a while.

You have to have a lot of patience.

After about 3 days, they will get use to living with you and start adjusting to their new life.

Since we have 3.5 rai in the country, all fenced, we have plenty of room for a puppy to roam around.

The first thing is to take them to a veterinarian for a checkup and vaccines.

This cost US $10 here in rural Isaan.

The puppy seemed to handle this visit to the Vet with no problems.

Then get some healthy dog food and treats.

This will get the puppy off to their best start.

Our puppy is very affectionate and wants attention.

You have to make time in the first week to accommodate their needs.

It is hard to not feel sorry, every single time you pass by an abandoned litter on the side of the road here in rural Isaan.

However, each individual person understands their own limits to taking care of pets.

This puppy is approximately 6 weeks old and just starting out.

Puppies will like to chew on things.

Having a bone or something for them to chew up will save your shoes!

After a couple of nights here, he is started to accept and adjust to life in a home.
